The ballet flat trend

Work from home dress vibes shall we say? Is the slide losing it’s luster? Maybe…and I’m liking this new option.

Being at home more often these days, can feel a little stifling fashion wise. Lounge wear is getting boring. I can’t with the Arizona Birkenstocks anymore. Here are some of my favorite ballet flats for the season.

Kids Shoe Fall 2021 Key Silhouettes

The closed toe slide is a silhouette I’m seeing more and more in the adult markets. The silhouettes are evolving, and this simple pattern is being adopted in an array of constructions.

The convertible back is also a good option for kids. I wen to Malibu a few weeks ago, and saw this brand at the Malibu country mart. It was an easy shoe and a silhouette I can see for kids. Japanese brand, Suicoke is also another brand to watch out for with sport casual looks.

Fall 2021 shoe and accessory color palette

One of my favorite tasks of being a designer is creating color color palettes. I think it’s great to have access to WGSN, but everyone is following their color palette’s. I like to create my own based on my own researcher nd look at WGSN for validation…maybe..I still trust my instincts, and design sensibilities.

Fall 2021 Key Silhouettes

Fall is always a fun season to design. I feel like there are so many options, and patterns to choose from.

Fall 2021 will be the year of statement pieces. We’ve lived thru a pandemic. We stayed indoors wearing sweats, sneakers, and some type of a slip on shoe. We’re ready to go out, and make noise again with our fashion choices.

A little vintage sneaker inspiration

About to start a sneaker project, and am doing research. Before starting a new project, I like to see what sneakers are on trend now, but I also like to look back, and see what trends were going on in the 80s and 90s and even back to the 60s and 70s, It’s interesting to see what trends have come back.

Here are a few sneakers I found that have some great details, colors, and materials.

COS takes Work & Stay at home footwear to another level

Speaking from a shoe design perspective, buying quality shoes has always been the most important item to buy. I don’t put price limits on shoes like I do with clothing. If I know I love a pair of shoes, and it’s going to be worn many times, and for years to come, I will opt to pay full price, and will definitely splurge.

Is leather sustainable?

Lately clients call me asking for design assistance using sustainable materials. When I ask specifically what they want sustainably, some know, others don’t, and many are misinformed.  With most certainty I can say most of these clients want an ethical option which is an inspiring start.

Kids Fall 2021 shoe trends you don't want to miss!

Designing kids shoes was my first kids shoe design job. It’s a category I really wanted to design for when I started designing shoes. I really loved designing shoes for kids, and still do. Why? It’s actually very creative. You can do a lot more, risk a lot more, play a lot more, and be as creative as you want. As I was doing some trend research, I found three trends in the women’s market that I feel are very translatable to kids. There’s actually a few more that are relevant to Fall. Here are my favorite three:

Have you taken steps into the sustainable realm? Consider these options!

Since I started designing shoes 18 years ago, it’s been primarily with brands using PU.

Price, margins, and sales were the drivers when designing shoes. Designing to as many trends possible, sampling these designs, and working with sales on buyer requests in order to make a sale was the way of life for many years. It’s a pretty similar process today, and dated I might add.

Podcasts & Sweats

Podcasts are something I became addicted to when I was traveling a lot for work. Going to China, sitting in cars, or airports got a little boring. Since then I’ve always beefed up my podcast library. Now with less travel, I listen while working, or walking my dog.
