Three slipper trends that are not just for the home

I recently saw a posting from a trend forecasting company that comfort slides/slippers will be trending for AW21/22. Personally, I disagree. Based on what I’m hearing and seeing, people are tired of the stay at home get up. Whenever possible, they’re taking the time to put something more than a slipper. In late 2021, and early 2022, I foresee a surge in dress shoes, and shoes that make a statement. Frankly I think the world will be looking forward to getting out of comfort footwear.

However, the slipper trend is evolving now. Since March, I’ve seen almost every brand offer their own version. Here are three comfort slipper trends I’m seeing now.

The house slipper is no longer a satin or fuzzy little thing. It has evolved to a real shoe with buttery leathers, slim leathers soles, and interesting toe characters inspired by Moroccan and Japanese influences. These are not just to wear at home. Venturing out for a walk in the city, going to a drive in movie, or just picking up dinner. It’s an option to feel like you’re wearing a shoe at home.

The other day I was with a friend, and noticed her cozy slippers, and was happy to hear they were Wal and Pai because I’ve been eyeing these beauties in the black leather option. Seeing a more cozy material peeked my interest. The Birkenstock slipper has evolved to something more stylish. I may consider wearing these post covid while walking my dog.

Prior to the pandemic, The Row was capturing the comfort but fashionable shoe market very well. They’ve really taken it to another level with their take on the man’s slipper. Lemaire’s super buttery leathers make a great shoe to wear at home while zoom meetings are taking place. A modern take to the man’s smoking shoe. Luckily at these price points, you can wear these outside as well.

Although I see this as relevant now, my instincts are that unless we are still in stay at home orders by next fall, this slipper shoe will be something we may want to put away for a while. We’re all itching for normalcy in the future, and wearing a slipper is a reminder of something we’ve been experiencing in 2020.
